Today we are continuing our series on Thankfulness. Here are some suggestions of worship, teaching, questions and activities looking how we can remember what God has done for us and how that helps us to be thankful.
This isn’t something you need to stick to, or complete in order or all at once but it is a plan that hopefully can help you to do church at home and look to Jesus together as a family. Feel free to pick the parts that work best for your child, I know different things suit different children and it depends how they’re feeling that day too! If you don’t normally do anything like this, do not worry! Have a read through and start with the parts you are most comfortable with doing. Ultimately you will probably be surprised with what your child comes out with. If this is something more familiar to you then go for it and add your own elements too!
Although a difficult time, this could also be an amazing time for you as a family to grow in faith together, to open up conversations and prayer with each other and to be surprised by all that God is doing in your child/children!
Let’s start with worshipping together through these songs.
There are so many things we can be thankful to God for. See if you can sing along and keep up with all the different things in this song!
Choose a game from either of these options:
- Song writing – Make up a song/rap with all the things we can be thankful for, like the song you just sang!
- Charades – Play charades where you act out something you are thankful for and everyone else needs to try and guess what it is!
Take a look at this video and an amazing miracle that God did for his people.
Questions to talk through together
- What did you see in this video? What was your favourite part?
- Do you think you’d have been brave enough to step into the river if God had asked you?
- What did God ask the 12 men to do before the waters came back across? Why do you think he did this?
- Do you sometimes forget the good things that happen when sad things happen? It’s so easy to focus on the sad things around us, but God knows when we are thankful it helps us to remember the good things that he has given us.
- Is there anything you think God is teaching you through this story?
Last week we looked at what it means to be content. Being content is being happy with what we have and what God has given us.
To be content it helps to remind ourselves of what we have and what God has given us and done for us. Remembering what God has done for us helps us to be thankful and helps us to trust him.
Build your own thankful tower
God provided miraculously for the Israelites as we saw in this video, they could never have crossed the Jordan river on their own! God provides for us every day too but we can sometimes forget all the things God does for us! God knows we forget, so he told the Israelites to mark the spot of this miracle with stones, they did this quite a lot in bible times! This helped them to remember what God had done for them that day and helped their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren remember too!
Today we’re going to make our own tower, this isn’t one that will stay a really long time like the standing stones but it will help us to remember today and through the week the things God has done for us.
Collect your empty toilet roll tubes, kitchen roll tubes, wrapping paper tubes, empty bottles etc and try and make a tower with them! You may need some glue or tape to join them all together and help it to stand up.
When you’ve got your tower, get some post it notes or cut up some paper and write one thing on each piece of paper that you are thankful for. Stick this to your tower. Try and cover all your tower with these notes of thankfulness!
‘Give thanks to the Lord for he is good!
His love endures forever.’
Read through all the things you have stuck to your tower and thank God for each of them individually. Ask him to help you to be thankful, even when things are difficult and when you feel sad. Being thankful helps us to focus on the good things not the bad things.
If you want a reflective song at this time, here’s a suggestion. Here we sing ‘your praise will ever be on my lips’. As we thank God for all he has done in our lives we praise him and focus on him at work in our lives.
You can find the lyrics here.
Here’s a song if you want to dance and continue worshipping God with our praise and thanks to finish church at home today.
